How to Choose a Blood/Fluid Warmer: Fixed vs. Soft-Line
In short

Hotech's two blood/fluid warmers differ in heater type: the FIW-4150 is fixed, warming at the unit body, with a flow of 1–12 ml/min; the 230 is soft-line, with warming extended along a flexible tube to near the patient end, maintaining temperature more effectively, at flows up to 20 ml/min. Choose the 230 for higher flow or to keep fluid warm closer to the patient.

Two heater types

  • Fixed (FIW-4150): warming happens at the unit body, and fluid gradually cools along the line after leaving it; compact and simple to operate.
  • Soft-line (230): warming extends along a flexible tube, carrying the warm zone closer to the patient end, with the tube position freely adjustable.

Flow rate and use

  • The FIW-4150 covers 1–12 ml/min; the 230 reaches about 20 ml/min, better suited to higher-flow situations.
  • The actual choice depends on each unit's workflow and clinical judgment; this article covers equipment specifications only.

Key specifications

  • FIW-4150: operating range 27–37°C, automatic cut-off above 42°C, 640 g, ABS housing.
  • 230: settable 30.0–39.0°C in 0.1°C steps, dual over-temperature protection (41±1°C and physical 85±3°C), audible and visual alarms.

FAQ

What's the difference between the FIW-4150 and 230?

The FIW-4150 is fixed and warms at the body (1–12 ml/min); the 230 is soft-line, extending warming closer to the patient, up to about 20 ml/min.

Which has the higher flow rate?

The soft-line 230 reaches about 20 ml/min, higher than the FIW-4150's 1–12 ml/min.

Why does the soft-line keep fluid warm closer to the patient?

Because heating extends along the tube, the warm zone reaches closer to the patient, reducing cooling along the line.
